
The biennial Gershanov Family Memorial Holocaust Essay Contest offers high school students in Illinois an opportunity to reflect on the contemporaneous nature of the Holocaust in their lives through the creation of an essay.
2008 Leo & Antonia Gershanov Memorial Holocaust Essay Contest examines the theme, “History’s Dark Echo: The Challenge of ‘Never Again’ in the 21st Century.”

In the more than sixty years that have passed since the end of the Holocaust, acts of bigotry, prejudice and intolerance, many of the magnitude of genocide have continued to occur. We ask Illinois students in grades 9 through 12 to share with us what they believe their generation can do to make “Never Again” a reality?
Awards for this years Gershanov Essay contest have recently been awarded. The winning essays will be posted shortly.
The biennial Gershanov Family Memorial Holocaust Arts and Writing Contest offers Illinois students in grades 5 through 12 an opportunity to share what they experienced through their museum visit or in their Holocaust studies through poetry, creative writing, illustration, and other methods of artistic expression.

The 2007 Leo & Antonia Gershanov Holocaust Arts & Writing Contest was a record breaker with nearly 1,900 entries received from students in grades 5 through 12 from throughout Illinois. They wrote poetry and short stories, created drawings, paintings and sculpture, and even some original musical compositions.
On May 20, the two dozen winners were announced at a public ceremony attended by over one hundred guests. Congratulations to all of the winners.
